On Tuesday (28th November) the lecture series began, giving us all an insight into research practices. The initial introduction by lecturer Chloe Twells covered the types of research:
– What is my work about etc. etc.
– Sources of literature & reviews
– Design the means of investigation
– Collect data
– Making a ‘Cultural Purchase’ each time you look at something
– Analyze you’re findings
All of this evidence should then be captured and collated into a written document of c2000 words.

In proportion therefore, as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decrease.” — How true this sadly still is, 158 years on, and it’s still happening. In the industry of illustration for example the introduction of computers in the mid/late 80’s as a mainstream tool for completing artwork has led to many changes not all for the better, which as a result has led to fees decreasing rather than increasing. During a conversation with my agent yesterday, I was informed that there are illustrators accepting jobs for the same pay as they would have received in the mid 1970’s. It really is time to make a stand and simply not accept these commissions, thereby forcing the tight fisted art directors to use stock illustration (another sore subject, but one we are going to have to live with) or clip art!!!! – Right I’ll get off my soapbox now.
